Back in the 1940s, Habitant Bay City in Michigan was not trying to keep up with delicate trends. They were making thick, honest, knotty pine furniture built to survive generations of chaotic dinner parties. The company was a legendary Michigan maker that carved out its own lane in American cabin classics right alongside Old Hickory.
This set of six captain’s-style armchairs is peak quality: solid pine seats, curved barrel backs, thick spindle supports, and sturdy swept legs. No prissy pretense, no delicate joinery you are afraid to sit on—this is furniture built to survive a heavy farmhouse table, a rowdy poker night, and several decades of somebody’s uncle leaning back way too far. The tenon joinery is absolute perfection.
Each chair is stamped Bay City Michigan on the underside alongside a factory stock stamp, so there is zero guessing on the pedigree—it is stamped right into the wood.
The wear here is the good kind: a warm, sun-aged patina, honest scuffs, paint, and wear, the kind of character you get from actual life (none of that cheap, factory-fake distressed nonsense brands pull today). One chair has a battle scar on the top crest rail, because six chairs surviving 80 years completely untouched would honestly be suspicious.
If you are looking for delicate, look elsewhere. Put these around a massive farm table or a kitchen island and let them do what they were born to do.
These chairs were the type of furniture that helped inspire and shape George Nakashima into the woodworker he became. Phillip Lloyd Powell would have been exposed to this type of joinery and woodworking, which inspired him as well. This company was making handcrafted, knotty pine furniture with exposed wedge tenon joints before bow-tie joints and natural edges were popular. This furniture was built to last and would look just as exceptional in a mid century modern environment as it would in a rustic log cabin style. Both Paul McCobb and Milo Baughman would be proud to own these chairs. These are the type of chairs that belong in Jackson Hole, Big Sky, or similar destinations!
